Is AI the Next Big Thing?

AI is not the next big thing: It is the current "big thing."
Years ago, hockey legend Wayne Gretzky when asked why he was so successful, he replied that rather than skating to where the puck was, he skated to where the puck was going to be next. For him, those "predictive analytics" enabled him to set an unprecedented level of performance as a professional hockey player. Years later, IBM's "Watson" further demonstrated the potential of artificial intelligence when it was able to secure a chess game victory over champion Gary Kasparov on the TV show "Jeopardy.
Recently, many leading business organizations including some in healthcare are utilizing artificial intelligence to gain efficiencies in operations and to improve patient outcomes. At a time when reimbursements are being reduced while operating costs are rising with inflation, AI adopters are automating processes and gaining other efficiencies to reduce expenses. Predictive analytics can also identify at risk patients and contribute to their care-delivery. Patient outcomes improve while costs are reduced.
Today, Intersect's partner Genetica is using AI to enable the creation of AI models without the need for coding. That feature reduces the time and expense of AI model creation by a factor of ten. The resulting reduction in cost along with the lack of need for specialized application developers serves to make the benefits of artificial intelligence available to a greater number of healthcare organizations.
An additional barrier to the adoption of AI has been the need for a consolidated data repository. That issue is easily solved by the adoption of Intersect on FHIR. In addition to providing a remote patient monitoring solution, Intersect on FHIR creates an aggregated data repository and the user interface for AI screens. It all adds up to enable the benefits of AI for your organization. A number of ready to deploy use-cases requiring minimal configuration are anticipated to be available in the near term. Use of those AI models will further reduce the cost of deployment.
Some of the ways that AI could benefit you and your patients are:
- Identifying diseases and diagnosis
- Self-diagnosis
- Improved medical image diagnosis
- Personalized medicine
- Survival analysis
- Learning health system
- Easier reporting from consolidated data regardless of its origin.
- Streamlined data integration from mergers or acquisitions
The operational and care-delivery benefits currently being realized from the use of artificial intelligence will enable organizations to separate themselves from others lacking that capability in terms of cost of care and patient outcomes. Ultimately that competitive advantage could positively impact the organization's long term growth and sustainability.
With Intersect reducing the financial and staffing barrier to adopting artificial intelligence to this extent, we believe it is an obvious value. The stakes are high and this technology is transformational and within your reach.
At Intersect's home on the campus of the University of Florida, the University is all-in with the belief that "artificial intelligence is transforming every sector of our economy - and influencing every aspect of our lives - the way the computer and mobile phone did. The University of Florida is changing the way we are able to think about small tasks and big questions - through AI."
Intersect is all-in as well. Reach out to us to learn more.
